Patangyu is a small grassroots community-based initiative in Ahmedabad (Gujarat), India with the intention to foster transformation in the lives of children belonging to low-income communities through the three pillars of Learning, Love and Community. By investing deeply in the sustainable transformation of individual lives, we can affect meaningful and lasting change in their families, communities and the generations that follow. Patangyu is process-oriented and powered by the children; it is constantly evolving and adapting to the needs and changes in the lives of the children and their communities. Although there have been countless children who have passed through Patangyu over the years, there remains a core group that has grown up with the program.
The name Patangyu (which means butterfly) was given by the children as they felt it best represented what the program means to them. The initiative began in 2005 in response to a young girl living on the roadside with her family. Even though she was 14, she shared that she had never been to school and would soon be married. With a quiet urgency, she asked if I would come teach her and the neighboring children. This marked the beginning of the journey of Patangyu. Initially, a few volunteers and I started running classes for the children of the roadside community consisting of 18 households. The children all begged to help sustain their families. The intention was to give them a safe and loving space and proper nutrition while imparting basic education and nurturing values and positive habits.
